Today on the farm we were able to till and hill the top field before the rain started. Now our onions and cauliflower/broccoli/lettuce transplants have a home... Next few days we will get some planted in between the showers....

Potatoes in the ground...

When you farm you feel like the spring is always a strange race. You wait at the start line watching the rain and then waiting until the ground is dry enough that you don't:

1. stick your tractor in mud

2. whip the mud into a smooth (and airless) soup

3. create thousands of mud balls which won't break up until next winter

So we wait... Then FINALLY it is dry enough. When that happens the tractor work starts, although by that point in every Ohio spring there is major rain in the forcast. So we race against oncoming fronts to get fields disced, tilled, and hilled before the rain starts again in earnest...

85 degrees!

Days like those this weekend, that come in the middle of April make my stress level start to JUMP!

THERE IS SO MUCH TO DO!!!! 85 degrees in April is not typical. We still could have a frost, even a snow. I need to keep reminding myself of that.

In the meantime the warm & dry weekend did a lot to dry out most of our fields. They are now all officially plowed and disced. By tomorrow they will all be tilled and we will get our hills raised. Tomorrow should be potato planting day if all goes as planned! Onions will follow soon after. All our transplants are looking on schedule and we have tons of seeds to start.

So the next couple weeks will be busy for poor CSA farmer hubby and me...

Farm news!

Thursday Farm news:

The fields are wet and getting wetter by the minute, so for the time being the potatoes and onions sit waiting until we can till and make our beds. If anyone is interested in helping with spring planting this year, let us know, with 500 pounds of potatoes and 10,000 onions we could use a little help and will set up a couple times where anyone who would love to help us will be loved in return!

We have thousands of little plants started and they are growing happily under grow lights, we are starting more seeds daily.

CSA-Farmer-Hubby has been busy since being on the farm full time since the end of March. Lots of little projects are getting picked up and this summer will keep him busy for sure!

We are hoping that the farm does well enough this year to allow us to buy one or two LARGE hoophouses (30X96 or so). If we can make that happen we will have veggies for you this time next year! As for now, we must wait until June for our own yummy food. Well except for eggs, we are getting about a dozen a day, so if anyone wants any shoot us an email. They are available for $4.00 a dozen.

I have not had anyone sign up for my last two spring classes, so I am going to go ahead and cancel them, if you are interested I will probably offer them in July if there is interest, so let me know...

Shouldn't Every day be earth day!

Hello everyone!

I figured that Earth day was as good a time as any to emerge from hiding. Sorry, I have been away for a while. I have been dealing with family issues and just trying to run to not fall to far behind on the rest of my life.

But I figured that I needed to start blogging again at some point! So today is the day...

Why not consider taking a local food pledge this earth day? This summer buy 20% of your produce at the farmers market or road side stands. Make Earth Day last all summer.

Know your farmer and know your food.

Lots of new ground has been plowed... Now we just have to wait until it drys enough to disc and till. Of course in the meantime it rained over an inch in 24 hours. This time of year is always a waiting game. Wait until it is dry enough to "X." But it is still April and 2 months before the csa start date! There is still time.

With any luck next year this time we will be harvesting the first veggies from a big hoophouse!
